BOOKREVIEW#53 Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James (International Giveaway)
You know you've fallen hard for something if you skip things to indulge yourself with something you want to do. A complete disregard of convention is a sure sign of strong desire. Strong desires, sometimes, can overwhelm and overpower and overcome you in sweet succession; which brings me to Fifty Shades of Grey. Read more after the jump.
My heart is pounding as I type this review. I started reading the first book of the Fifty Shades trilogy roughly around 10am yesterday. I was on my way to a Shu Uemura make-up workshop in Makati so I was dead sure to read an erotica wasn't the best idea there is. But I submitted to the thought because I knew I can't make Grey wait. I am always a victim of intrigue. I won't be surprised if I die from curiosity, so to speak.
It's been 24 hours since I first flipped through the tantalizing words that comprised this much talked about trilogy but I can still feel its effect on me. No, it's not just that my hormones are stirred (consider this as a warning, the book will stir you up); but it's because with the gift of hindsight, I find the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise as coercive and deep--pun intended.
It's not about the sex (innuendos would be plenty). Personally, what I found sexiest about the book is the chase. The push and the pull and the confusion and the restraint. Oh crap, does that make me perfect for the lifestyle? Woe. Is. Me.
But really... what relationship isn't power play? I believe there will always be dominance and submission when it comes to relationships: platonic, casual, serious, sexual; and Fifty Shades of Grey made that typical nature of human behavior as romantic and passionate and perverse as ever. I felt each page of Grey crawling under my skin as I read through--and as expected, like an addict, I even opened my gate for him.

If you've ever been owned. If you've ever given yourself up to a desire. If you've ever granted someone the pleasure of you, you must read Fifty Shades of Grey.
If you've ever given up your own wishes. If you've ever felt perplexed by your own disobedience. If you've ever acted out of your nature just because someone or something has this unexplainable effect on you... you must read Fifty Shades of Grey.
More than the kinky, Fifty Shades of Grey is an explorative and experimental sneak peek to a world of pure honesty and acceptance. While I was reading through (and calming my body), I felt how behind the presumed darkness of the storyline, there is a basic human need emerging.
The need for connection.

If you've ever loved somebody you know you shouldn't; if you love someone you know you shouldn't, you need Fifty Shades of Grey. It gave me what I did not expect from an erotica. It gave me clarity and a clearer perspective. Sometimes it's not about knowing or testing or pushing your limits. Sometimes it is what it is. As much as love is love--pain is pain.

LOL! I did the same thing you did! As soon as I started reading the first book, I had to read the other 2 right afterwards!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the trilogy isn't all about the sex. It's really about the journey the 2 main characters take to discovering how to completely open up to someone they truly love.
Out of the 3 books, I think the first one is definitely the best! Ahhh, the chase!
I'm curious about this book. I've heard lots of friends reading this. And maybe, well not maybe, now I'm sure of it, hee Now's the time for me to read it myself :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't dismissed 50 Shades just yet, though I couldn't get past it right now. I am not sure why :(

ReplyDeleteI love your review! Just exactly what I want to say too. This book definitely opened my mind and changed my perspective in life and love. ReplyDeletePEPOT
I Have read all 3 books twice already and it made me appreciate the character of Christian Grey more. It's not about those kinky stuff that attracted me to read the book. It's the story, that in reality, there may be this "Christian Grey" out there that we will meet and probably fall in love with but the question would be is, how do we accept him as he is. Can we really love this kind of person?
ReplyDeleteMany have qualms on reading the book because of the erotic scenes. But hey, we need to be mature enough to handle and appreciate it. I have a book review too about the book and my favorite line per book :)
I am very sorry to say this, but I did not enjoy 50 Shades as much as others did. Not sure why. Glad you had a good time with this one though.

ReplyDeleteThe most daring thing I've done is join our company's Amazing Race Challenge wherein we have to run to all nine stations - go up a wall, go under some ropes, jump over some tires - and swim at the end of the race. Daring because I've had asthma for years and I could've had an attack by participating in an active activity such as that - but I did not and even if my team didn't win the race, I still feel like a winner for finishing it - breathless, yes, but not asthma-wheezing-breathless type. :)

ReplyDeleteI still don't get it (the hype) but whatever.... yes every relationship is more or less a power play....some people like to be dominated, its just eaiser sometimes. I think people just like porn, sex sells, its intriguing. We're animals!
